Club History
East Bergholt Badminton Club started its life as the Stutton
Badminton Club, which was formed in 1975. Four friends and
neighbours started to play socially and gradually the
numbers increased to the stage when the Stutton Club was
formed, so called because the main members were residents of
the village of Stutton. The Club played on one Court at
Holbrook High School on a regular basis. When the numbers
and enthusiasm got to a certain level, the Club entered a
mixed team in the Ipswich and District League. Holbrook High
School only had the one Court, so, as the numbers grew, the
club had to look for larger facilities. Luckily, a league
club, already called East Bergholt Badminton Club, was
moving to play at Manningtree Sports Hall and they were
changing their name to The Vale, so we were able to book
their vacating Courts at East Bergholt High School, which
had four courts. In September 1980 a Mens teams was added to
the already Mixed team in the Ipswich League. The name
Stutton continued for a time but in 1983 there was only one
original Stutton member, and the club were playing in East
Bergholt, so the Club name was changed to East Bergholt. In
1981 in addition to the mens and mixed team, a ladies team
entered the Ipswich league.
The club used to hold quite a few annual events which
included Christmas dinner, BBQ, car treasure hunt and even a
Disco to raise funds for the Club. Although the
subscriptions ensure the club is now financially stable,
some of the social events continue because the members enjoy
them, so the Christmas meal and BBQ are regular features of
the club calendar.
Over the following few years the membership gradually
increased, so by September 1987 a second mixed team was
formed.
In September 1991 a junior section was started, preceding
the Senior Club nights. Junior members were entered into
tournaments, and winter leagues. They gained such competence
that some were selected to train at County level and
represent the District. Once the juniors became 14 they had
the opportunity of progressing to the Senior Section. The
junior section ran until April 2004, when the Club were
unable to resource the coaching any longer. Luckily another
Coaching source was found which enabled the youngsters to
continue their badminton, albeit outside the auspices of our
Club.
In September 2004, another men's team was formed and,
therefore, the club now runs, 2 mixed, 2 mens and 1 ladies
teams in the Ipswich & District League, as well as the
social badminton on Club nights. (Fridays)
The Club holds Minutes and Accounts dating back to 1980 and
